"POLIO" Update

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers to immediately stop using benzocaine-containing over-the-counter drug products, including those used to treat teething pain, in infants and children under 2 years of age as they can pose a "serious risk."

The Drug Safety Communication issued today builds on prior warnings from the agency regarding the risk for methemoglobinemia associated with benzocaine-containing products. "This dangerous condition is the result of elevated levels of methemoglobin in the blood and it can lead to death. It causes the amount of oxygen carried through the blood to be greatly reduced," the agency said in a news release.

Parents using Fisher-Price’s Rock ‘n Play Sleeper with their young babies, take note.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Fisher-Price issued a warning Friday "due to reports of death when infants roll over in the product."

Since most infants start rolling over around three months, the warning advises consumers to stop using the product by three months "or as soon as an infant exhibits rollover capabilities."

The government safety commission said in the statement it is aware of 10 deaths since 2015 "after the infants rolled from their back to their stomach or side, while unrestrained. All 10 infants were 3 months or older."  Read Full Story >>

All to often we do not emphasize the important "air quality" issues in the prevention and management of children with Asthma ( also called " Reactive Airway Disease"). The focus tends to be on medicatio and treatment but should include vigorous efforts at prevention. Please read the article: http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/138/5/e20162589 and implement as many measures as possible even though they may not be obvious present problems...they certainly can become problems that could have been prevented.

HPV 9 vaccine: new recommendations

Nearly six in ten children in the U.S. will have obesity in adulthood if current trends continue, a new study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has found.

AAP Policy Statement

Problems begin when media use displaces physical activity, hands-on exploration and face-to-face social interaction in the real world, which is critical to learning. Too much screen time can also harm the amount and quality of sleep. Organizations like Common Sense Media can help parents evaluate media content and make decisions about what is appropriate for their family.

Among the AAP recommendations:

For children younger than 18 months, avoid use of screen media other than video-chatting. Parents of children 18 to 24 months of age who want to introduce digital media should choose high-quality programming, and watch it with their children to help them understand what they're seeing.
For children ages 2 to 5 years, limit screen use to 1 hour per day of high-quality programs. Parents should co-view media with children to help them understand what they are seeing and apply it to the world around them.
For children ages 6 and older, place consistent limits on the time spent using media, and the types of media, and make sure media does not take the place of adequate sleep, physical activity and other behaviors essential to health.
Designate media-free times together, such as dinner or driving, as well as media-free locations at home, such as bedrooms.
Have ongoing communication about online citizenship and safety, including treating others with respect online and offline.
