CALL NOW to make appointment for this years Influenza vaccine!!!! "Flu season" has started as early as
late October. As always we will be having extra staff available just to administer "flu" vaccine several days
each week and on Saturdays. We will also be pleased to give it to parents at the same time as children, upon request
We will not be giving "Flumist" for the following reason.
FluMist, the quadrivalent live attenuated influenza vaccine, gave children virtually no protection against flu during the 2015-2016 flu season, researchers found.
According to a study funded by the CDC and published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, FluMist's effectiveness in children was just 5%, with negative 19% effectiveness against influenza A (H1N1) pdm09.
By contrast, the conventional inactivated-virus flu shot had effectiveness of 60% among children and 63% effectiveness against influenza A (H1N1) pdm09. All in all, children who received FluMist were more than twice as likely to contract the flu as children who received the inactivated virus vaccine.
Similar data were presented at last year's Advisory Committee of Immunization Practices meeting in June, leading the committee to recommend against the live attenuated influenza vaccine for the 2016-2017 flu season.
